The Civil War soldier did not come prepared to fight in the equipment aspect.  His mind was ready but his resources were scarce.  Some brought their family's flintlock.  Others toted long pikes and axes.  Then came the day the uniform was issued, the rifle put in hand and the civilian becomes a soldier.
However the proccess of government issuing wasn't always this ideal.  Sometimes it took days, weeks or even years for a regiment to be outfitted with proper weapons and clothing.  It may never happen at all, as was the case for quite a number of Confederate regiments.  What they came with on their backs is what they fought and died wearing.
No matter what the dress or equipage, they were all soldiers of this great Civil War.  They all went into the war fueled by a cause.  Some lived to tell of their pards they grew to know as brothers.  Others stayed at the ground they fought on, interred in the cool earth, victims to their cause's horid battle.  Now all are gone in body and soul, only to live on through memories, stories, pictures, books and reenactors.
